The Department of Toxic Substance Control has officially released the highly anticipated Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule (HWGIR), set to take effect on July 1, 2024. While this adoption does not incorporate every rule change in the Federal HWGIR, there are many changes that generators will need to incorporate fairly quickly into their site procedures.

Some of the changes that may affect your on-site hazardous waste management include:

  • Re-notification for small quantity generators
  • Additional marking/labeling requirements for storage and off-site shipping
  • New large quantity generator closure requirements
  • Increased requirements for satellite accumulation
  • Additional preparedness, prevention and emergency procedures for small and large quantity generators
